Background & experience

Jibriil Ali is a Registered Social Worker (MSW, Carleton University) with experience across primary care, community mental health, and youth and family services in Ottawa. He currently works within a Family Health Team setting, where he provides individual, family, and group counselling, psychosocial assessment, and crisis support in collaboration with physicians, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals.

Jibriil's clinical experience includes supporting children, youth, and families through behavioural and emotional challenges, as well as working with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and major life transitions. He has worked in both structured clinical environments and community-based programs, allowing him to support clients across a wide range of needs and life circumstances.

His approach to therapy is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and collaborative. He focuses on helping clients better understand their experiences while also building practical skills to manage stress, regulate emotions, and move toward meaningful change. He integrates evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and trauma-informed care.

Jibriil believes that therapy works best when it is grounded in safety, respect, and genuine connection. He aims to create a space where clients feel heard, supported, and able to explore both challenges and goals at a pace that feels manageable.

What working with me is like

Clients can expect a supportive, collaborative, and non-judgmental space where they are heard and respected. My approach is calm, structured, and grounded in practical support, while also making room for deeper emotional processing when needed.

In early sessions, we focus on understanding what is bringing you in, your current challenges, and what you would like to change or improve. Together, we begin to identify goals that feel realistic and meaningful for you.

As therapy continues, sessions may include exploring patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, building coping strategies, and developing skills to manage stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm. Depending on your needs, we may also work on processing past experiences, improving relationships, or navigating life transitions.

Therapy moves at a pace that feels manageable. Some sessions may feel more reflective and emotional, while others may be more focused on problem-solving and skills. Above all, clients can expect a safe, confidential space where they do not have to navigate challenges alone.

Care that fits your context

I approach therapy through a culturally responsive and culturally humble lens, recognizing that mental health is shaped by identity, culture, family systems, immigration history, religion, and lived experience. I do not view distress in isolation, but within the broader context of a person's life and environment.

A key part of my approach is avoiding assumptions and instead taking time to understand each client's unique worldview. I recognize that people may experience and express stress, anxiety, or depression differently depending on cultural expectations, family dynamics, and community context.

In practice, this means adapting therapy to fit the client rather than expecting the client to fit a fixed therapeutic model. With some clients, I may take a more structured, skills-based approach when they are looking for practical tools. With others, I may slow the pace and focus more on storytelling, meaning-making, and exploring emotional experiences in depth.

When appropriate and welcomed by the client, I also make space for conversations around identity, spirituality, and cultural meaning, especially when these are sources of strength. Cultural responsiveness in my work is an ongoing commitment to learning, reflection, and adapting care so that each client feels respected and understood within their own context.

Personal story

What led me here

Jibriil's interest in mental health began through his early work in community and youth-focused settings, where he saw firsthand how deeply environment, stress, relationships, and unmet needs can shape emotional and behavioural challenges. These experiences highlighted how often people are coping with difficult circumstances without the support, tools, or space needed to process what they are going through.

Over time, his work in both community agencies and healthcare settings reinforced the importance of accessible, compassionate, and practical mental health care. He observed that many individuals were not only looking for insight into their struggles, but also for concrete strategies, stability, and a safe place to make sense of their experiences without judgment.

These experiences ultimately led him to social work and clinical practice, where he could combine therapeutic skills with a broader understanding of systems, culture, and lived experience. His work continues to be shaped by a belief that meaningful change is possible when people feel understood, supported, and equipped with tools that fit their real lives.

Today, Jibriil brings together his experience in youth and family services, primary care mental health, and trauma-informed practice to support clients navigating a wide range of challenges. He remains committed to creating a space where clients can feel grounded, respected, and supported as they work toward change at their own pace.

Why this work

Why I chose social work & therapy

I chose social work and therapy because I was drawn to work that sits at the intersection of people's lived experiences, their environment, and their mental health. Early in my career, working in community and youth-focused settings, I saw how often people were navigating significant challenges without enough support, understanding, or practical tools to help them cope.

What stood out to me most was not only the presence of distress, but also the resilience people showed while trying to manage difficult circumstances. I became interested in how change happens, how people can begin to make sense of their experiences, regain stability, and move toward something different when they are supported in the right way.

Social work appealed to me because it considers the whole person within their context, not just symptoms or diagnoses. It allowed me to combine counselling skills with an understanding of systems, culture, and barriers to care.

At its core, this work is about helping people feel less alone in what they are carrying, and more equipped to move forward at a pace that feels possible for them.

Jibriil's mission is to provide accessible, compassionate, and evidence-based mental health support that helps individuals feel understood, grounded, and capable of meaningful change.
